How To Care For Your Cat And Dog Naturally?

By respecting a minimum of rules, it is easy to improve the well-being of cats and dogs and to treat them with natural medicines. Without replacing the veterinarian, find out how to treat your cat or dog naturally!

natural medicine

Caution is advised when it comes to treating your cats diseases or even your dog's. Indeed, it is often difficult to make an exact diagnosis because our companions have their own ways of expressing their affections.

In addition, common drugs in human medicine, such as over-the-counter analgesics (paracetamol, ibuprofen), are completely contraindicated in dogs and cats, and, as a general rule, human pharmaceutical specialties do not make it possible to respect dosages specific to each species. Natural remedies, on the other hand, are generally more animal-friendly and well tolerated. Many of them are suitable for everyday care.

The remedies of choice, easy to use and safe, are numerous: aloe gels, clay, propolis, hydrosols, gemmotherapy (care based on buds), phytostandardized extracts (EPS), powdered plants, infusions or decoctions of plants, homeopathic specialities, floral elixirs... In dogs, use essential oils with the same caution as in humans. And be aware that they are generally contraindicated in cats; their "immature" liver eliminates them very poorly, which makes small felines particularly sensitive to their toxic effects.

Homeopathy for motion sickness

Give your animal the Tabacum or Cocculus remedies: three 9 CH pellets the day before the trip or three 5 CH pellets at the start and every two hours during the trip. In principle, they are easy to administer. Slide them into the back of the mouth, avoiding handling them too much.

If you prefer aromatherapy, for dogs over 20 kg, you can give a drop of ginger essential oil on a spoon before departure, and if your animal weighs over 30 kg, you can do the same with a drop of lemon essence.

Clay for small wounds

It is possible to treat small wounds yourself (scratch wounds, abrasions, scratches, or shallow bites). Clean any dirt with soapy water, then cut the dirty or troublesome hair if necessary (taking care not to hurt the animal). Then disinfect with a solution (mother tincture of calendula or lavender, for example).

Apply a good dab of green or white clay moistened with water to form a thick and sticky paste, in which you can incorporate two or three drops of propolis solution. Renew the poultice several times during the day, especially if it is accessible for licking. But if your pet ingests this paste, it will be harmless to its health.

Of course, if no improvement appears after a few days, it is better to consult a veterinarian.

Aloe gel for itching

Itching and skin irritation related to food or parasitic causes are common in both species. This is called eczema or atopic dermatitis. When the damage is moderate, aloe gel, which is calming, healing, and moisturizing, is the ideal solution to soothe the itching.

Non-greasy, it does not clutter the coat. Moreover, it is totally devoid of toxicity. You can use fresh bottled juice like lotion. But the stabilized gel in a tube is more practical. Apply it twice a day to the lesions, massaging to make it penetrate. Generally, the animal shows immediate well-being.

Fleas and ticks: think repellent.

In the event of a significant infestation of fleas and ticks, there are very few natural products with truly insecticidal properties (biocides), and they can prove to be just as toxic as synthetic insecticides. To avoid this, there are many natural repellent products that keep fleas and ticks away. They prevent contamination by fleas in animals with little or no infestation and prevent tick bites.

For dogs, you can make a repellent spray or shampoo based on essential oils.

In cats, you will have to make do with repellent hydrosols such as true lavender, geranium, verbena, cedar, and rosemary (alone or in a mixture): rub the coat generously three times a day for three days. Then do the operation again once a month.

Recipe for an anti-flea and anti-tick spray for dogs

In a previously sterilized bottle, pour:

  • 15 drops of super lavandin essential oil;
  • 15 drops of rose geranium essential oil;
  • 10 drops of Scots pine essential oil;
  • 5 ml of dispersing agent (Disper or Solubol);
  • 30 ml of lavender hydrosol.

Shake vigorously. Spray against the hair at least twice a week, before and after walks or outings in nature.
