Sources of poisoning are common in dogs and cats, both inside and outside homes.
The symptoms of pet poisoning vary greatly depending on the poison in question, but it is important to identify them in order to act quickly. In this area, it is the speed of intervention that partly conditions the survival and recovery of the animal.
What are the first signs of pet poisoning?
Hesitant gait (ataxia), tremors, hypersalivation, anorexia, generalized weakness, digestive disorders (vomiting, diarrhoea), respiratory disorders, convulsions, haemorrhages… all these symptoms if they occur without obvious reason (road accident for example) must lead to suspect poisoning in the dog or cat.
You must react immediately and, first, call your veterinarian (or a veterinary emergency service if the clinic is closed) and warn him of your emergency arrival.
It is important to bring the suspect product or its packaging to the practitioner if you are aware of it so that he can check its composition and find out about the toxic product that has been ingested. Medical management may indeed differ depending on the responsible poison.

In case of pet poisoning, do not move the dog or cat
While waiting for the veterinarian, several emergency actions must be mastered: do not move the animal, prevent the risk of suffocation by cleaning its mouth (blood, vomit), keep it warm under a blanket, leave it calm.
Above all, do not try to make him vomit or make him swallow milk, a widespread misconception that has no scientific basis.
The veterinarian is the only one capable of setting up an effective emergency treatment which depends on the cause of the poisoning.
